GUWAHATI, April 23: Businessman Suresh Kumar Agarwal, who was untraceable from April 12, 2018, surrendered before the CBI Special Court, Guwahati on Monday.
Earlier, Commissioner of Income Tax (Audit), Guwahati Swetabh Suman and Income Tax officer (Audit) Pratap Das had been arrested on charges of taking bribes to the tune of Rs 40 lakh from Suresh Kumar Agarwal to protect him from facing legal prosecution.
When the Income Tax department registered prosecution cases against Agarwal and started the trial, Swetabh Suman allegedly collected a bribe of more than Rs 40 lakh through a middleman with the intention to deliver judgment of the case in favour of Agarwal. Two others – Pranjal Sarma and advocate-cum-IT practitioner Ramesh Goenka – were also arrested in the case.
