GUWAHATI, March 28: Over 6,500 contractual secondary school teachers staged three-hour sit-in all over the State today demanding, what they said, dignity of teachers. The agitation was staged today under the All Assam Secondary Additiol (Contractual) Teachers’ Association (AASACTA).

The contractual teachers for secondary schools had been appointed in 2010 on merit basis. In a statement issued to the press today, the association said that the Gauhati High Court had directed Dispur to regularize their posts without having to face TET. “The previous Congress government took a decision to regularize our posts in the last Cabinet meeting. Chief Minister Sarbanda Sonowal also formed an Assembly Committee that recommended the regularization of our jobs on humanitarian ground. However, the Education Department is playing with the lives of the teachers by requesting the High Court to review its order,” the release said.
