Three of a family die in accident

MIRZA, Oct 15: In a tragic accident, PWD/PHE contractor Dhruba Mahanta (63), his son Arb Mahanta (24) and daughter Himashree Mahanta (30) died on the spot while his wife Geetanjali Mahanta (51) sustained serious injuries when the Xailo car (AS01AP4588) they were travelling in hit a parked truck from behind on NH-37 at Bortezpur under Palasbari police station at 2 am last night.

According to reports, Mahanta and his family members went to the marriage of his sister's daughter at Chhaygaon yesterday. Though he hailed origilly from Chhaygaon, he was staying at Geeta Mandir in Guwahati along with his family members. The accident occurred when they were on their way back home at Guwahati from Chhaygaon. The truck (ASEC7293) was loaded with sand. The local people rushed Geetanjali to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). The driver of the Xailo has since been absconding.

Mahanta was known for his meek ture.

A pall of gloom descended at Chhaygaon and Geeta Mandir in Guwahati.
