Trade unions protest held in Guwahati

GUWAHATI, Sept 2: Along with the rest of the tion, the general strike of the various trade unions, called by the Central Trade Unions and Federation of employees today against the anti-working class and anti-people policies of the Union government got a tremendous response from the workers and employees in Guwahati on Wednesday. In Guwahati, protest demonstrations were held at Railway Gate No 2 in Fancy Bazaar, Maligaon and Paltanbazaar. In Fancybazaar, the demonstrators carried out a rail blockade programme whereas in Maligaon and Paltanbazaar the demonstration was limited to a general strike.

Thanking the people on behalf of the Joint Platform of Trade Unions, Deben Bhattacharyya informed that several trade union leaders of organizations like CITU, AITUC, AIUTUC were arrested by the police during the demonstrations. Condemning the police atrocity, he said that it has once again revealed that this government is not for the poor common masses of the country.

The various demands of the trade unions were, to control inflation, amendment of the labour act, pension for all employees, to stop privatization of government and public sector enterprises etc.
