Truckload of ganja seized in city

GUWAHATI, March 17: Two persons were arrested with a ganja haul in Guwahati! The sleuths of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized a ganja-laden truck (AS25BC1811) from Tripura at Khapara in Guwahati on Saturday. The truck bound for Uttar Pradesh was carrying 1,000 kg ganja. The consignment was packed in 78 packets.
This is not the first such cash in Guwahati, being projected as the gateway to South-East Asia, away from the cliché – Gateway to the Northeast. Till today in fiscal 2017-18 4,500 kg ganja was seized by DRI sleuths, leading to the arrest of eight persons. Is not Guwahati being used as a transit route for transportation of ganja and other contrabands from the Northeast to elsewhere in the country? Apart from the road network of the State, trains from Assam are also being used for carrying ganja and other smuggled goods. Recovery of ganja and other smuggled goods in trains from Assam, especially the Rajdhani Express, is almost a regular matter.
On Saturday, RPF personnel conducted search in 15960 Down Kamrup Express and seized 35 kg ganja. In the wee hours on arrival of the train on platform No. 1 of Guwahati Railway station they could recover 12 packets of ganja as unclaimed weighing about 35 kg wrapped in a black plastic which was kept concealed inside the south-side east toilet of coach No. NF 08207 (S-10) of the train.
The value of the ganja is around Rs. 3,15,000.
