Two held for felling teak tree

DIMORIA, Aug 18:  Two youths were arrested on Wednesday on charges of making away with four segun (teak) trees at Marakdola under Sopur Forest Range on the city outskirts.  Acting on a tip off a team of Sopur police in association with a group of forest officials led by Sopur Ranger Dalim Das arrested the two youths from Kamalajari Soigaon area here. The two arrested youth has been identified as Sunil Keleng and Pur Teron.  Ranger Dalim Das said that Lohit Rahg, the prime accused of the tree felling case, is still at large. Police have registered a case against the two youths under section 379 of the IPC and 24/25 under AFR Act, 1986.

Police said the arrested two youths along with Lohit   had cut down the four trees near Forest IB at Marakdola on July 2. Police said on interrogation, the accused confessed their involvement in the felling of tress. The duo was sent to judicial custody.

East Kamrup DFO Ranjit Konwar recently visited Marakdola area where a number of Segun trees had been felled recently. The DFO, accompanied by Sopur Ranger Dalim Das and Gaonburha Ranjit Rahang, visited and inspected the spot. The local people had alleged that without nexus with forest personnel it was impossible on the part of miscreants to fell the tress. The trees were felled with the help of saw machines. Some locals had alleged that large-scale tree felling is taking place in the area by timber smugglers in cahoots with a section of corrupt forest officials.
