Two killed in separate mishaps

GUWAHATI, April 28: Two persons were killed in two separate mishaps in the city on Thursday. The victims have been identified as Sibajit Basumatary(20) and Jakrit Singh(18).

The first accident occurred in Christianbasti area, when Sibajit Basumatary who was riding an Activa (AS01-BT-5824) skidded on the road and came under a bus (AS01-BC-2738) which was moving just behind him. Soon, after the accident, the situation turned hostile in the area and angry mob went on a vandalism spree damaging the bus. The mob even tried to set ablaze the bus, however, the police immediately intervened and brought the situation under control. The victim was a resident of Kalapahar area. Meanwhile, it has been learnt that the driver maged to escape soon after the accident. The body of the victim has been handed over to the family members after autopsy.

On the other hand, in another accident that occurred near Sankardev Nethralaya in Beltola, one Jakrit Singh who was coming from Basistha to Beltola in an Activa (AS01-BS-6998) had a head on collision with a school bus coming from the opposite direction towards Basistha and died on the spot. The bus (AS25-C-6284) belongs to Kendriya Vidyalaya 9th Mile. The driver of the bus maged to escape soon after the accident.

The increasing number of road accidents in the city has been a matter of concern to the commuters as well as the administration. Sometimes, if the bike stunners’ are too be blamed, sometimes, it is the reckless driving of the city buses that leads to such accidents. It may also be mentioned that, most of the accidents that take place at night, occur under the influence of alcohol.

It may also be mentioned that, in the last year alone 303 persons died in several road accidents that took place in the city.
