GUWAHATI, July 18: Two siblings – thirteen-year-old Sajida Begum and her 10-year-old sister Moi Begum – drowned in the Bharalu in Guwahati on Tuesday.
The two, both daughters of Sahab Ali and Joimala Begum of Kotahbari in the city, dared to cross the Bharalu river with a raft made out of thermocol. The duo had to go to the other side of the river that is in spate to fetch salt and mustard oil from a shop. They did cross the river with their makeshift raft. However, on their way back, they fell from the raft and drowned in the river. Their bodies were fished out by the local people. The bodies have been sent to the GMCH for post-mortem. The two girls were reading in Datalpara Primary School. Their father, who hailed from Chhaygaon, is staying at Kotahbari where he is working as a daily wage earner.
