Varsities should be made centres for social development: Governor

GUWAHATI, August 6: “Universities shouldn’t be the centres of knowledge only but should be centres for society’s development as well,” said Assam Governor PB Acharya.

The Governor discussed at length the draft of New tiol Educatiol Policy 2016 with the Vice-Chancellors and members of the Governor’s nominees to different forums of various Universities of the State at a meeting held at Raj Bhawan in Guwahati today.

The Governor urged the academicians to accord importance to value-based education. He said that if value-based concepts are imparted to the students they will be in a position to apply them in their practical field.  He also said, “Our institutions should adopt a synergistic approach between value-based education and professiol education so that education plays a catalytic role to make the students employable.” He asked the Vice Chancellors to conduct research on the social problems so as to ensure participation in the country’s development process and contribution to a knowledge-based society and economy.

The Governor also advised the Universities to facilitate tie-ups with different industries like food processing, healthcare, real estate, solar energy etc. “This will eble the students develop industry-centric expertise,” the Governor said, and stressed the need of having a dialogue on trade, commerce, industry and education.

The Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) has made public the draft New Education Policy 2016 on June 29, 2016. The 43-page document focuses on addressing gender discrimition, the creation of educatiol tribuls and a common curriculum for science, mathematics and English.

The Vice Chancellors and the members also presented their expert view points on the proposed education policy and committed to work diligently in building the future citizens of the society.

Baruah, VC of Krish Kanta Handique State Open University Dr. Hitesh Deka, Shri Tabu Ram Taid, Dr. Nomal Borah, Dr. L.P. Deka, Dr. Bhogi Bhuyan, members of the Governor’s  Nominees along with a host of other dignitaries were also present in the programme.
