JPC hearing on Citizenship Act (Amendment) Bill

GUWAHATI, April 19: In the wake of the hearing on the Citizenship Act (Amendment) Bill- 2016 organised by the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC ) in New Delhi on April 17, a whole lot of organizations of Assam are up in arms against the allegedly controversial role played by the Axom Xatra Mahasabha (AXM) at the hearing. With every passing day, more and more organizations are coming to the forefront to condemn the AXM, terming the Satra body as being working against the interest of the people of the State.

Asom Yuba Parishad has vehemently condemned the two Mahasabha representatives- Janardan Devagoswami and Kusum Mahanta – in respect of their alleged deposition before the JPC in New Delhi on April 17. The Parishad is of the view that the alleged deposition by Mahasabha was nothing short of a threat to the very existence of the people of Assam and that the Xatra body was allegedly involved in a conspiracy to push the people of the state into the realm of utter darkness.

AYP president Sunil Deka and working presidents Jitu Borgohain and Tapan Das have also alleged that that Mahasabha was not invited to the hearing in New Delhi. Hence it has questioned as to how the Mahasabha could attend the same. The Yuba Parishad has opined that a deep-rooted political conspiracy could be involved in the attendance of the Mahasabha at the hearing.

The Parishad has further stated that around the time the NRC is being updated as per the Assam Accord under the direction of the Supreme Court, any move or statement that goes against the interest of the people of Assam made by any individual or group would not be tolerated.

Terming Janardan Devagoswami and Kusum Mahanta of the Mahasabha as ‘Badan’, the Parishad has unequivocally asserted that no one has given the right to the duo to lead the people of the State to utter disaster and that such persons should be identified and ostracized by the people of Assam.

The Parishad made it clear that it would not accept the existence of illegal immigrants in Assam under any circumstances, adding that if the Bill turns into an Act, the very existence and identity of the indigenous Assamese people would be in jeopardy.

The Parishad leaders have said that the parent body AGP has already made its position clear on the Bill and that the Parishad has also been opposing the Bill. They have asserted that the Bill would violate the historic Assam Accord, would have an adverse, negative and destructive impact on language, literature and culture of Assam.

The leaders have opined that proper implementation of the Assam Accord only would provide the needful protection to the people in the socio-political realm.

In the same vein, the Anusuchit Jati Yuba Chatra Parishad, Asom (AJYCPA) has stated that that the Xatra body cannot be pardoned for the alleged role it played at the JPC hearing in New Delhi.

In a statement, general secretary of the organization Jitu Kakoti has made an appeal to the people to ostracize the Mahasabha while alleging that the governments in Delhi and Dispur ushered in the Bill to bring in hoards of Hindu immigrants to the State and that this respect the Mahasabha is providing the needful succour and nourishment to the powers that be.

Allegeing that the Mahasabha was working towards destruction of the Assamese nationality, the AJYCPA has appealed to the people of Assam to boycott the Satra body.

On the other hand former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has also criticized the stand of the Mahasabha. He alleged that the Xatra Body is working under the pressure of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal
