We're designed to be discarded after one use: SPOs

BY OUR STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, Nov 29: Did Dispur design special police officers (SPOs) in the State to be discarded after one use? The All Assam Special Police Officers Welfare Association (AASPOWA) sniffs such a design on the part of Dispur. Talking to newsmen in the city on Wednesday, leaders of the association said they had been agitating since 2012 when they lost their job security all of a sudden.

“The SPOs were appointed in 2008 to control the situation and problems arising out of the upsurge in terrorist activities in Dima Hasao district. The onus of maintaining security and safety in the hill district was with the SPOs. Since 2012 we have been jobless. As the situation in Dima Hasao is under control now, we’ve been fired by the State Government,” one of the leaders of the Association said, and added: “Dispur then told us that they would appoint us in the AISF. However, as of now there is no development towards that end. Our file is doing rounds between the Home and Fince departments. We want the Fince Department to pass the file as soon as possible.”
