What residents face when GMC looks the other way!

 By our Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Oct 14: Just imagine, drains on either side of a path in the city left without cleaning for six months together! The residents of Ajanta Path at Hatigaon in the city would like to have stiff noses so as to get rid of, what they say, a stink bomb. Strangely enough, the Guwahati Mayor is not aware on this!
The drains on either side of Ajanta Path are choked with garbage, discarded plastic materials and other solid wastes, besides flowing black water. If seems that the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is still to reach the area located in the heart of Guwahati.
Talking to The Sentinel, a resident of Ajanta Path said, “I’m tired of complaining it to the department concerned for cleaning the drains. For six months I haven’t seen any GMC workers to clean the drains that are choked with garbage. A smart spell of rain for half an hour is enough to inundate the path, leading to water-logging in the area.” A man doing business in Ajanta Path said, “It’s the irresponsibility on the part of the GMC that makes people in the area inhale foul air day in, day out. Besides that I have tried all the telephone numbers available in GMC website to inform it of the problem. However, not a single number given in the website is active. Getting frustrated, I had to engage other people at my own cost to clean the drains. If this situation is allowed for long, the residents in the locality will soon fall ill. Negligence on the part of the civic body is glaring. Some 12 streetlights on Japath in the area glow round the clock. How come such wastage of power is allowed by the civic body?”
When contacted, Guwahati Mayor Mrigen Sarania said: “I’m not aware of the fact that the drains on either side of Ajanta Path haven’t been cleaned for the past six months. I’ll take up the matter on Monday since this Saturday is a holiday. For the last one month our people are busy with the FIFA Under-17 World Cup. They couldn’t attend to other duty. We’re set to resume our other duties like keeping the city clean soon.”
