GUWAHATI, Nov 28: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has asked the BJP as to which cupboard the money spent by the BJP during the 2014 Lok Sabha election and 2016 Assembly election in Assam came from, and if the money spent was black or white.

Around 2,000 leaders and cadres of the State Congress took out a procession from Dighalipukhuri to the RBI office in Guwahati today in protest against the demonetization of 500-rupee and 1000-rupee notes by the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre, pushing the poor people of the country towards untold sufferings.

Leading the procession from the front, APCC president and MP Ripun Bora said: “We’ve nothing to say on the government’s decision to check black money, corruption, circulation of fake notes and funding to terrorism. However, what’s seen on the ground is something different. In the ming of checking corruption, black money, circulation of fake notes and funding to terrorists the government is out to make a political gimmick by pushing the commoners towards untold sufferings. Which cupboard the amount spent by the BJP for helicopter cost and holding of rallies in the 2014 Lok Sabha poll and 2016 Assembly election in Assam came from? Was the money black or white? Where the huge amount of money spent by the BJP in Lakhimpur Lok Sabha and Baithalangshu Assembly bye-polls came from? What’s the source of the money being spent by the BJP during the ten days after demonetization?”

Leaders of Opposition in the Assam Assembly Debabrata Saikia and former minister Rakibul Hussain were also present at today’s protest. Elsewhere in the State, all District Congress Committees (DCCs) staged such protests at public places in district headquarters today.

Reacting to the BJP’s statement that former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has Rs 12,000 crore black money with him for which he could not submit utilization certificates as stated by the CAG, APCC general secretary Mukul Sarma, secretary Imdad Hussain and spokesperson Ripupar Konwar asked the party back: “Why hasn’t the BJP-led government at the Centre ordered a high-level inquiry into it in the past two years and a half when they know that Gogoi has black money with him? Are they officials from CAG, the Directorate of Enforcement or Income Tax or CBI sleuths who have such information?”
