GUWAHATI, May 9: Will Rupahi Pathar in Sivasagar get back its lost glory? This royal field of Ahom era came up for discussion on the floor of the Assam Assembly today. The discussion has seemingly come to fruition with the Government assuring the House of contemplating on upgrading the field as a modern-day sport complex.

AGP MLA Pradip Hazarika raised the issue of the Royal Ahom field on the floor of the House during the Question Hour today. He said that he had raised the issue of preserving the Royal Ahom field - Rupahi Pathar - when the Congress was in power in the State so as to keep the historic glory of the field intact, but his plea fell to deaf ears of the government. Hazarika wanted to get an assurance towards that end from State Sports and Youth Welfare Minister ba Doley, who was also present in the House.

However, Fince Minister Himanta Biswa stood on behalf of Doley and said: "I'm going to respond to this question. We're going to take up the Royal Ahom field in Sivasagar district - Rupahi Pather. I request the AGP MLA to prepare a proposal for boosting the field and submit it to the Government."

However, after the session, Hazarika told The Sentinel: "Ahom kings did hold sports extravaganza like Olympic at that time. Sportspersons from neighbouring countries like Nepal, Myanmar and Bhutan did take part in the games. The sad part of the episode is that vast areas of the filed have been encroached upon during the Congress regime that even gave pattas to some institutions against the land of the field. This is an opportune time to make the field regain its lost glory."
