Will make Agri department farmer-centric: Atul Bora

GUWAHATI, May 11: State Agriculture Minister Atul Bora on Thursday said that his government is committed to make the department farmer centric rather contractor centric. He viewed that the Agriculture department was marred with controversy in the past

The minister was present at the iuguration of the crop calendar in presence of selected progressive farmers of the state and departmental officers in the city.

The minister said that the department is gradually coming out of the bad reputation it has earned due to some demoralized officers in the past. “We have found a lot of irrigation schemes are defunct in the State. CID investigation is also going on the mismagement,” he said. He assured the farmers of timely supply of seeds and filling up of engineer’s posts lying vacant in the department.   

In a step to inspire the farmers the minister said that the government would confer krishi karma award on two farmers and farmers will felicitated on Independence Day. He also announced distribution of 1 lakh power tillers and tube-wells among farmers. “For a village to develop a farmer has to be developed first,” he said.

Explaining the need of the crop calendar Bora said that it would provide the farmers with information regarding crop cultivation. “The crop calander would tell farmers about the need of time-wise cultivation of crops and about cultivation of more than one crop in a year. It would generate awareness among farmers about different types of cultivation. All the major crops have been included in this 3 page calander,” he said.

Agriculture Commissioner Secretary Amlan Baruah, Deputy Director Prafulla Mahanta, Chief Engineer Mash th were also present on the occasion.
