Citizenship (Amendment) Bill

Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, April 23: Protests and slogans against the Centre’s move to ensure the passage of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 see no end in Assam. Members of the AJYCP staged a statewide mass sit-in demonstration against the Bill on Monday.

All district committees of the Parishad staged sit-in demonstrations in their respective districts and sub-divisions with the demand for cancellation of the decision to amend the Citizenship Act. The Parishad said that the Sarbananda Sonowal Government is betraying the people of Assam in the name of protecting the Assamese nationality.

A statement issued by AJYCP president Putul Dutta and general secretary Palash Changai said: “The Nerendra Modi-led Government at the Centre has hatched a conspiracy to spell doom for the people of Assam by bringing an amendment to the Citizenship Act. If the Act is amended, Assam will be badly affected. The BJP-led Sarbananda Sonowal Government in Assam is also lending its support to the anti-Assam conspiracy. Sonowal made it to Dispur with the promise of protecting Assam and its interests, but now he is betraying the people of the State. We’re going to stage such protests in the State till the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill is not cancelled. We also appeal to the people of Assam to oppose the Bill.”
