Will Swachh Survekshan 2018 adjust its lens?

A filthy stretch

By our Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Jan 6: What makes Swachh Survekshan 2018 not bringing many filthy spots that are glaringly visible in the city into focus? What makes it not to aim its lens at such spots and adjust it for clarity? One such spot in the city is the path that leads one to the ASTC office and yard at Paltan Bazar.

This stretch is an extension of GS Road beyond Paltan Bazar Police point towards Guwahati Railway Station and ASTC office in the left. This stretch is short on length (around 150 metres) but long on filths. This is a juncture where a whole lot of unjustified things are seen day in, day out. This is a very busy area where one even cannot walk freely – as though the stretch of the road goes astride a busy market. The stretch of the road has its sides soggy even when there is no rainfall these days. Where does the water come from? The stretch has a drain only in one side. The other side is without any drain. Maybe, water oozes out from a pipe nearby or people there release water on the road.

The road has been properly paved, but not properly maintained. The roadsides have garbage on the soggy ground. As though to make matter worse, the police station there parks a whole lot of vehicles requisitioned by it or damaged vehicles, making the road not at all user-friendly.

Guwahati is very much under Swachh Survekshan 2018. However, many such spots in the metropolitan city are beyond the drive’s binocular. Will it adjust the lens so as to see all such sports clearly?
