GUWAHATI, March 8: Some 100 women of Assam celebrated womanhood on Thursday, and for all the right reasons. The 100 women included some who’s who carving a niche for themselves.

The programme was organized at Bashishthapur in Guwahati by SATSAREE, a socio-cultural development organization.

Assam’s first woman pilot Hira Hazarika, former MLA Mridula Saharia, singer Bi Bhagawati, writer Anima Gogoi, social activist Manjula Bhattachrya, and others added sheen to the  programme.

Speaking at the programme, Hira Hazarika said: “In our days paddling a bicycle was not allowed for girls, socially. A girl paddling bicycle in those days was never taken at ease. I had to go ahead daring the challenges. It’s nice to see girls doing everything which boys can do nowadays. It pleases us now that male domince in society is passé. Guwahati wears a different look now, so do girls living here and elsewhere in the State. However, the job is still to be well accomplished. Around thirty per cent women in society are still confined in the four walls of their families. They need to know themselves and that needs awareness. The progressive women have to work as leading lights for such backward women and lead them.”

Singer Bi Bhagawati said: “Even singing was a taboo for girls in those days. I had to face tantrums from people for being a singer. Since singing is my first love when I was in Class VI, I had to defy all odds and booked a berth for myself in All India Radio. Now there’s no obligation from any quarters, but I can’t sing at doctors’ advice.”

SATSAREE president Mandira Baurah said: “I like to work for society, and I want to continue this. It’s a nice day to have got all here at one platform.”

Retired pilot Hira Hazarika, singer Bi Bhagawati, former MLA Mandira Saharia, police officer Rozy Choudhury were felicitated at the programme with a citation, a bouquet, a gamosa and a gift each.

The day was also celebrated at Bipan Kshetra, Panjabari in the city by Panjabari Senior Citizens’ Association and Dakshin-Pub Guwahati ri Mancha amidst various programmes.

On the occasion of Women’s Day, Nemcare Hospital, Guwahati offered free-of-cost heart check-up for women on Thursday. The offer will remain open till March 14, 2018. From Friday the offer will be made available for males as well.
