World Meteorological Day observed

GUWAHATI, March 23: World Meteorological Day was today celebrated at Regiol Meteorological Centre, Guwahati.

World Meteorological Organization (WMO) is a specialized agency of the United tions. WMO was established on March 23, 1950 and since then it is a specialized agency of the United tions for meteorology (weather and climate), operatiol hydrology and related geophysical sciences. Theme of World Meteorological Day 2015 is ‘Climate Knowledge for Climate Action.’

On this occasion, scientific lectures and exhibition depicting meteorological aspects was organized in the local Regiol Meteorological Centre, Guwahati.  Prof. Sushanta Kumar Dutta, Principal, Girijanda Chowdhury Institute of Magement and Technology (GIMT), Azara, Guwahati was the chief guest of the function. He delivered lecture on ‘Measurement and Prediction of Solar Radiation.’ Later, Dr. Sanjay O’Neill Shaw, Scientist-D delivered lecture on the topic- ‘Combating Climate Change’, Rupa Jaggi, Scientist-D presented her lecture on - ‘Agro Meteorological Services in India and its Importance in Climate Change’ and Sunit Das, Scientist-D delivered lecture on ‘Weather and Youth.’

Posters, models and various meteorological instruments were displayed. Visitors from local schools, colleges and various departments were explained about the importance of various meteorological parameters. How various types of meteorological observations are taken, how they are processed using modern sophisticated tools, how different types of numerical models are run, products generated and filly different communication channels through which the weather forecast is dissemited to various users and to the general public. Also, Dr. Sanjay O’Neill Shaw, Deputy Director General of Meteorology expressed his happiness towards the interest shown by the people in listening to the scientific lectures and appreciating the services rendered by India Meteorological Department which were shown in the exhibition. He also said that IMD. has plans for strengthening the meteorological support in Northeastern region which will help in dissemition of more user friendly meteorological products resulting in quality weather forecast.
