Youth arrested while trying to extort

GUWAHATI, Dec 13: The sleuths of the crime branch of the police have arrested a youth for demanding Rs 10 lakh from the chief executive officer of the Assam State Agriculture Marketing Board (ASAMB), Padmath Das, yesterday.    The youth, Ghakanta Das (42) hailing from Bamunia Hiloidharigaon in Dibrugarh district, sent a demand note of Rs 10 lakh in an envelope to Das. The note was written in an NDFB letter pad. Das did lodge a complaint with the Paltan Bazar police station on December 3 in this connection.  On December 12, the youth telephoned Das asking him to pay the amount at Dispur Supermarket. The police spotted the location and arrested him soon after. A case {IPC 120(B), 387 (1015/16)} has been registered in Paltan Bazar police station in this connection.  The youth was produced today before the court that sent him to five-day police custody. The police are investigating if the youth has any link with the NDFB or who his accomplices are.
