DIMORIA, July 5: The police have detained five youths in connection with the physical assault to cow suppliers and seizure of three cattle-laden trucks carrying 48 cows and a driver at Patarkuchi in Sopur on July 2.

The development came close on the heels of a directive issued by DGP Mukesh Sahay recently.

On July 2 members of the Hindu Yuba-Chatra Parishad, Asom (HYCPA) seized three trucks carrying cows on the pretext that the animals were being carried illegally. With the news hitting headlines, the DGP was on record making a statement that the guilty would not be spared. DCP East Manish Mishra asked the Sopur police to detain those who had assaulted the people carrying cows. Sopur police registered a case (184/17) and detained five – Diju Kathar, Lohit Chandra Das, Pradip Singh, Nripen Boro and Suraj Baruah.

Meanwhile, Guwahati Police Commissioner Hiren th reached Sopur police station on Tuesday, had a meeting with the police and CRPF personnel. He said that none involved in such incidents would be spared. He also asked the police to be to be on alert so that people could take law on their hands. He also requested the people to cooperate with the police.

The HYCPA also lodged an FIR in connection with the incident.
