Miscarriage is when a pregnant woman loses her child before 20 weeks. Most women undergo a miscarriage, in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. This is the only reason why it is said that the first 3 months of pregnancy are very crucial and one needs to be very careful in their activities. Nonetheless, miscarriages happen unintentionally.

Signs of miscarriage

  • Heavy vaginal bleeding
  • Pain in lower abdomen just like the period cramps
  • The pregnancy signs go away

Causes of miscarriage

  • Out of control
  • Issues with chromosomes
  • Having many or very less chromosomes

These causes are not something that is caused by you or your partner.

Health problems of the mother such as hormonal issue, infections, diabetes, thyroid, lupus, smoking, drinking alcohol, consuming illegal drugs may cause miscarriage too.

Women who are pregnant at their late 30s to 40s have maximum changes of miscarriage than younger women.

Signs of miscarriage

Not all signs resemble miscarriage, but following are someof the signs and symptoms that you will notice if you had a miscarriage:

  • Spotting
  • Light vaginal bleeding but which becomes heavy eventually
  • Cramps
  • Stomach ache
  • Back pain
  • Feverish
  • Weakness
  • Nausea
  • Sudden weight loss
  • Contractions
  • Sometimes, embryo attaches in fallopian tubes and you develop symptoms of miscarriage.

You must immediately consult your doctor if you come across any of these symptoms. It is always better to diagnose the cause at the earliest. You can understand if you have such an issue if you notice the following signs:

Pain in the belly

Bleeding

Spotting

Shoulder pain

Tendency to poop

Fainting

Infection can be caused due to miscarriage. You can understand if you are infected if you have fever, stomach pain, heavy bleeding, chills. If these symptoms are there, then you need to rush to your doctor.

Diagnosis

Consult your doctor if you think you have any such symptom. Your doctor will suggest thatyou go for an ultrasound. Also, you may be asked to get a blood test done to check the level of hormone. If the hormone named human chorionic gonadotropin level is low then there are fair chances that you had a miscarriage. For making it surer, doctors may also ask you to go for the hormone test and ultrasound for the second time.

Medications and surgery

Naturally it takes just two weeks, for the remaining tissue to pass out from the body. But if it exceeds two weeks or in any case if you have any sort of infection and the bleeding doesn’t stop then you must consult your doctor. Doctors would suggest some medicines that will cause heavy bleeding and the remnant will pass out. You may also feel nausea, diarrhoea and cramps at this time. Also, dilation and curettage is done in which the cervix is opened and by gentle suction and/or scraping, the remaining tissues are removed.

Recovery from miscarriage

Physical recovery may take two months at maximum. And you should start menstruating around six weeks at maximum. It is recommended to not have sex for around two weeks. But mental and emotional recovery takes time. Consult your doctor to recommend some therapist who will eventually help you to come out of this emotional phase. Some people also develop anger, sadness that can last longer. Remember that your partner may also grieve about the miscarriage and it is quite possible that both of you may take a little longer to manage these emotions. Support each other as bestas you can and take the help of a counselor if needed. Talk to people who you are comfortable with.

Ask your doctor for some advice as to when you can think of conceiving once again. But first of all you must be mentally, physically and emotionally sound before conceiving again. But if you had miscarriage more than twice you must consult your doctor and ask your doctor to suggest you to help you to conceive in a healthier way.

Treatments after miscarriage

Treatment is done basically to avoid any infection and stop the heavy flow of blood. Most of the times, conceiving after a miscarriage will be healthy. But if you miscarried more than twice then doctors will do some imaging tests and diagnose if there is an issue with the structure of the uterus or other reasons. It can also be followed by an ultrasound, or an X-ray, hysteroscopy.

Endometrial biopsy is done to check if any abnormal cells are present.

Genetic tests are done in order to understand if there is something wrong in the chromosomes.

It is to be noted that miscarriages cannot be prevented. These are mostly caused by some genetic abnormalities in the fetus. Not all miscarriages happen due to genetic abnormalities, it can happen for some other reasons as well. Make sure you adopt a healthy lifestyle and be in that perfect peace of mind for better pregnancies.
