Sharing views on the findings of the Israeli study that confirms that sleep helps in repairing the damaged DNA thus improving brain performance. The study published within the ‘Nature Communications’ journal by the researchers from the Bar-Ilan University in Israel reveals that deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) breaks/damages within the brain cells throughout the day time and this harm is reduced throughout the sleep. Accepting with the study findings, Indian neurobiologist says that this explains the many brain disorders caused by sleep deprivation.

“We have already known that sleep loss will result in irreversible brain damage. Any sleep disturbance for extended durations can have an effect on brain performance and can even lead to ageing. Sleep leads to detox of brain i.e., removal of the brain’s waste so that it gets ready for a lot of info consecutive day as it helps with ‘memory consolidation’. The findings of this study align with the conception of brain’s waste disposal system and so it's extremely seemingly that the deoxyribonucleic acid gets repaired in sleep,” aforementioned Dr Vikas Pareek, Senior analysis scholar, National Brain Research Centre.

DNA harm will be caused by several processes as well as radiation, oxidative stress, and even neuronal activity. Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) repair systems among every cell correct this harm. The study findings show that in wakefulness, deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) harm systematically accumulates and might reach unsafe levels. The role of sleep is to normalize the degree of deoxyribonucleic acid harm in each single vegetative cell (brain cell).Using 3D time-lapse imaging techniques in live zebrafish, the researchers were ready to outline sleep and show that single neurons need sleep so as to perform nuclear maintenance.

“Human brain can store solely restricted information before it needs rest. While not this sleep, there's a huge risk of losing recollections because the brain doesn't get enough repair or rest time to require in additional info. This study clears the foggy reasons on why the brain doesn't work properly in lack of sleep,” aforementioned Dr Ashutosh Kumar, Clinical man of science, All India Institute of Medical Sciences.
