New Delhi: An 18-year-old man shot 10 people dead on Saturday at a Buffalo, New York grocery store in a "racially motivated" attack that he live-streamed on camera.

As per the authorities, the attacker was wearing military-style clothing and body armour. However, he has been nabbed and the FBI is investigating the mass shooting at the supermarket as a hate crime and racially motivated violent extremism.

The gunman initially shot four people outside the shop, killing three of them, then went inside and continued firing, Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia said.

Among those killed inside the store was a retired police officer working as an armed security guard.

''The guard engaged the suspect, fired multiple shots, but the gunman shot him'', Gramaglia added.

When police arrived, the shooter put the gun to his neck but was talked down and surrendered.

The suspected gunman was identified as Peyton Gendron, 18, of Conklin, a New York state community about 200 miles (320 kilometers) southeast of Buffalo.
