Dhaka: As many as 35 people lost their lives and over 450 injured after a huge fire broke out at a shipping container depot in Bangladesh's Chittagong last night.

"So far 35 dead bodies reached the morgue here," PTI quoted a police officer stationed at the state-run Chattagram Medical College Hospital (CMCH).

According to Police Outpost Sub-Inspector (SI), Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH), Nurul Alam, the preliminary investigation into the accident has revealed the fire broke out due to a chemicals reaction.

As per the Dhaka Tribune, there was a massive explosion while firefighters were extinguishing the fire following which the fire spread all around.

Istakul Alam, chief of the Health and Services Department at Red Crescent Youth Chittagong, confirmed the death toll to the local media of Bangladeshi.

''More than 450 people have been injured in this accident, out of which 350 are in CMCH. The death toll may be higher in other hospitals,'' he said.

According to reports, the nearby buildings were shaken due to the blast and the windows of the houses there were shattered.

Chittagong Fire Service and Civil Defense Assistant Director Mohammad Hussain Sikdar said, "Around 19 firefighting units were deployed to douse the fire and six ambulances were also present at the spot."
