Guwahati: At least 23 ferry passengers were killed in the Bangladesh capital Dhaka on Monday when the vessel sank after a collision with another vessel, officials said. A dozen people are still said to be missing after the accident.

An official informed that the boat was carrying around 50 passengers when it capsized in the Buriganga river that runs along southwest Dhaka's Shahjahan Shikder.

An official confirmed that the dead include six women and three children. Some passengers swam ashore to safety, but several are still missing. "So far, we have recovered 23 bodies and are looking for those missing," the official said. It is to be noted that hundreds of people die each year in ferry accidents in Bangladesh, a low-lying country that has extensive inland waterways but slack safety standards.
