GUWAHATI: A massive fire broke out at a huge cargo ship full of luxury vehicles that were abandoned adrift in the Atlantic Ocean on February 17.

The 656 foot-long Felicity Ace roll-on/off car carrying ship was sailing from Emden of Germany to the port of Davisville in Rhode Island.

According to a statement by the Portuguese Navy on Wednesday, when the fire broke out at the ship it was sailing 90 nautical miles in the direction southwest of Portugal's Azores Island, a remote archipelago in the mid-Atlantic.

As the situation got worsened with the spread of fire, the 22 crew members left the ship. They were then pickup safely and were taken to a nearby hotel with the rescue team of Ponta Delgada Maritime Search and Coordination Center.

The luxurious vehicles onboard include Volkswagens Auto Group Vehicles and Porsches Cars. It was reported that one of the cars in the ship belongs to an automotive show host and journalist named Matt Farah.

It is said that there were a dozen vehicles onboard but the exact number of cars affected in the incident is not yet confirmed. However, the Felicity Ace is expected to carry over 17, 000 metric tons of cargo.

The Vice President of PR at Porsche Cars North America, Angus Fitton assured all possible support to the customers, dealers and colleagues at Porsche AG. Registered to Panama, the ship is operated by Japanese shipping line Mitsui O.S.K Lines (MOL).

According to information from the marine traffic logs, the burning ship loaded with expensive cars left Germany on 10 February and was scheduled to reach Rhode Island on 23 February.

The Portuguese Navy informed that as of Thursday, the ship continues to burn and an ocean petrol vessel is positioned on the location for monitoring the abandoned cargo ship.
