China gives unproven coronavirus vaccine to thousands

China is injecting thousands of its people with Covid-19 vaccine shots, which are still under trial, a report said.

The first ones to get the dose were workers at state-owned companies followed by government officials and vaccine company staff who are getting vaccinated.

Teachers, supermarket employees and people traveling to risky areas abroad would also be given the unproven dose, the report said.

Those who are getting these vaccine shots are also made to sign a "nondisclosure agreement", the report said.

Global heath experts have questioned whether their consent has been taken or not.

In its defence, China has informed that the World Health Organization supported China's experimental coronavirus vaccine programme, which began in July.

China said WHO in June, Zheng Zhongwei, a National Health Commission official.

One of WHO chief scientist Soumya Swaminathan has declared that countries can approve use of medical products within their own jurisdiction in the current emergency situation but only as a "temporary solution".

China currently has 11 vaccines in clinical trials and four in Phrase 3 trials.

Among the 11 vaccines, two are developed by state-backed China National Biotec Group and another by Sinovac Biotech.

Another vaccine to combat the dreaded virus was developed by CanSino Biologics, which was approved to be used in the Chinese military in June.
