China sentences ex-Interpol chief Meng Hongwei to 13 years in jail

Beijing: A Chinese court on Tuesday sentenced former Interpol chief Meng Hongwei to 13-and-a-half years in jail after he pleaded guilty to accepting bribes worth over 14 million yuan ($2 million). The 56-year-old was also ordered by the Tianjin No 1 Intermediate People’s Court to pay a fine of two million yuan ($289,540), reports the BBC. The court added that Meng would not appeal the verdict. In the first hearing of the trial last June, Meng, who was the first Chinese head of Interpol and had not appeared in public since September 2018, was accused of having “taken advantage of the convenience and power associated with his various posts” between 2015 and 2017 to help businesses and individuals secure illegal profits, reports Xinhua news agency.
