New Delhi: The outspoken entrepreneur behind Tesla and SpaceX, Elon Musk is the richest man on the planet. A business magnate, engineer and industrial designer, Elon Musk has scripted history, as he overtook the Amazon chief Jeff Bezos, to become the richest person in the world. The information was reported by the US media on Thursday.
Musk went past Bezos on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, which is a ranking of the world's 500 wealthiest people. What made him overtake the Amazon chief is the 4.8 per cent rally in Tesla's share price on Thursday. The net worth of Musk is $188.5 billion at 10.15 AM in New York on Thursday. His net worth is 1.5 billion more than Bezos, who has held the topmost spot since October 2017. Musk is a rival to Bezos in the private space race.
A Twitter account, with the username "Tesla Owners of Silicon Valley" shared the news of Musk grabbing the number one spot on the wealthiest person chart. He tagged Musk and wrote, "@elonmusk is now the richest person in the world at $190 billion."
To which, Musk replied, "Strange." Further to that tweet, he replied, "Well, back to work..."
The total combined net worth of the 500 richest men on the planet comes to $ 1.8 trillion. However, the gains were disproportionate at the top, as the top five has fortunes in excess, that is, $ 100 billion, while the other 20 people have at least $ 50 billion.
However, in just a week into the year 2021, the rankings have already been upside down by the extraordinary rallies. Zhong Shanshan of China has already vaulted past Warren Buffet to claim the sixth position, following the surge in the shares of his bottled-water company, which further added $ 15.2 billion to his already existing fortune.
