Iran-Based Egyptian Saif al-Adel Becomes New Head of Al-Qaeda, Says US

WASHINGTON: After Ayman al-passing Zawahiri's in July 2022, the Egyptian Saif al-Adel, who now resides in Iran, was named Al-leader, according to the US State Department. After the United Nations reported that Saif al-Adel is now the group's leader, "indicating continuity for now," a state department official said, "Our view corresponds with that of the UN — that al-new Qaeda's de facto leader Saif al-Adel is based in Iran."

Few observations regarding Saif al-Adel, who is reportedly the new leader of Al-Qaeda:

1. In spite of the Afghan Taliban government's worries, Al-Qaeda has not formally recognized him as its leader.

2. The previous leader, Ayman al-Zawahiri, was reportedly killed by an American rocket in a Kabul residence last year, according to a UN report.

3. According to the UN report, Saif al-residence Adel's in Iran is an issue that Al-Qaeda takes seriously. In light of the problems posed by ISIL, "His location raises questions that have a bearing on Al-intentions of al-Qaeda's to assume leadership of a worldwide movement," the UN assessment stated.

4. Former Egyptian special forces lieutenant-colonel Saif al-Adel, 62, is a member of Al-veteran Qaeda's leadership.

5. Saif al-Adel trained some of the hijackers who took part in the September 11, 2001 attack and helped the group increase its operational capacity.

6. According to AFP, Saif al-Adel has been in Iran since 2002 or 2003. Initially placed under house arrest, he later travelled to Pakistan.

7. According to the report, "Saif is one of the most seasoned professional soldiers in the global jihadi movement, and his body bears the scars of battle."
