New Delhi: Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi resigned on Thursday after a key coalition boycotted a confidence vote.

With this development, it is now expected that the country will witness an early election and a renewed period of uncertainty for Italy ad Europe at a critical time.

As per reports by international media, Draghi submitted his resignation to President Sergio Mattarella during a morning meeting at the Quirinale Palace. However, Maitrela's office who had rejected the same resignation earlier, this time took note of the same and asked the Draghi government to act as a caretaker government.

Draghi's government fell apart on Thursday when his coalition partners from the right, left and populist parties rejected the prime minister's appeal to let the legislature finish its term and come together on an EU-funded program to overcome the pandemic.
