Italy’s Mount Etna Eruption: Europe's Most Active Volcano Cause Tremor, Flights Delayed

NEW DELHI: The main city in eastern Sicily, Catania, was covered in ash on Sunday due to an eruption of Mount Etna, the most active volcano in Europe. The airport in Sicily had to suspend operations because of the eruption. The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) of Italy stated that they were closely monitoring Mount Etna but visibility of the eruption was being hampered by cloud cover on a rainy day.

As per reports, no injuries were reported so far. Airport authorities to resume operations once conditions get better. Etna is considered to be the tallest volcano in Europe which has about 11,000 feet height.

Moreover, Italy's national Civil Protection Agency had warned on Thursday that "sudden" fluctuations of Etna's activity could occur due to an increase in volcanic activity. The volcano erupted in the early years of 2021, lasting several weeks. But since 1922, it hasn't caused a significant eruption.

Meanwhile, According to INGV, surveillance had found evidence of increased tremor activity in recent days. According to a report, residents of the villages of Adrano and Biancavilla reported hearing tremendous booms coming from the volcano on Sunday.

In a warning on Thursday, Italy's national civil protection service stated that "sudden" fluctuations in Etna's activity could happen due to heightened volcanic activity. The volcano erupted in the early years of 2021, lasting several weeks.

It happens as Italy is already dealing with one of its worst floods in recent memory.

Over 36,000 people were left homeless and 14 people lost their lives as a result of the terrible floods. As a result of allegations in the local media that several cities are still underwater, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni had to end her G7 summit in the Japanese city of Hiroshima.
