New Cabinet Is Expected To Be Sworn In Today Amid Sri Lanka Economic Crisis

New Delhi: Amidst the government's efforts to pacify the anger of the people in Sri Lanka, who are facing an economic crisis, the new cabinet is expected to swear in on Monday.

Earlier on Sunday, all 26 ministers of the country had resigned from their posts.

Education Minister and Leader of the House Dinesh Gunawardene told reporters that the cabinet ministers have submitted their resignations to Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, although he did not give any reason for the collective resignations.

He also informed that Rajapaksa would hold a meeting with his younger brother and President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

"We discussed in detail the situation in the country. Solutions to the fuel and power crisis will come out," the Education Minister added.

Notably, there is a lot of resentment among the people towards the government for not being able to handle the economic condition of the country.

Leader of the House of Opposition in Colombo Sajith Premadasa said that they are there to protect the right to life of the people by protecting their economic, political, cultural, religious, civil, and all other rights.

''This government is depriving them of those rights. Therefore, we are there to defend the interests of the people,'' he was quoted as saying by the media.

In view of the protests in the country, a curfew was imposed, despite this, there were widespread demonstrations on Sunday evening. The protesters are demanding the resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

President Rajapaksa issued a special gazette notification late Friday night declaring a state of emergency in Sri Lanka with immediate effect from April 1.

Apart from these, the government also imposed a 36-hour curfew from 6 pm on Saturday evening to 6 am on Monday (April 4).
