New Delhi: Russia on Thursday carried out a military attack on Ukraine soon after President Vladimir Putin announced military action.

In several videos, the explosions sound can be heard in Ukraine after its capital Kiev has been reported to have been attacked by cruise and ballistic missiles.

Announcing military action, Putin also threatened that no one should interfere in this matter; otherwise the result would be bad.

Putin also asserted that the Ukraine-Russian war cannot be avoided.

"That's why Russia is launching a special military operation. Its goal is not to capture Ukraine," he added.

Putin has also asked the Ukrainian military to lay down arms and go home.

Following the attack, the Ukrainian government has started evacuating Kyiv airport.

Russia's representative to the United Nations said the special operations announced by President Vladimir Putin are to protect the people of Ukraine, who have been suffering for years.

"Our goal is to free Ukraine from genocide. He said that the decision has been taken in accordance with Article 51 of the United Nations Charter, we will analyze the situation in Ukraine," he added.

According to unconfirmed reports,Russian forces had destroyed or rendered unusable the Ukrainian navy, and taken control of Boryspil Airport in Kiev.

Access to the Black Sea and Azov Sea have also been cut off.

Reacting over the same, United States (US) President Joe Biden has that Putin has chosen a premeditated war that will bring a catastrophic loss of life and human suffering.

'Russia alone is responsible for the death and destruction this attack will bring, and the United States and its Allies and partners will respond in a united and decisive way. The world will hold Russia accountable,'' he added.

Biden said he will be monitoring the situation from Washington, DC, and will continue to get regular updates from his national security team.
