TikTok Class Action Lawsuit Settlement 2021: Here's All You Need to Know

The TikTok users in the United States had received a message notification on Monday 15 November regarding the submission of claiming for getting money as compensation.

Users on getting the notification raised several questions on social media expressing their confusion on the matter and thinking if this notification is a part of a larger scam.

This settlement is not a scam but it's true as the parent company of TikTok, ByteDance in February this year agreed for the payment of $92 million as a class-action payout to settle down the allegations against TikTok. The allegations are that the app has gathered personal information from users without any consent from them.

According to the settlement affecting 89 million users from TikTok, the company will disclose and add changes in its process of data collection. The settlement has come up as a result of the combination of 21 cases or lawsuits against the app and among them, many cases are filed on behalf of the minors.

The complaints filed in Illinois district court of United States says that the app TikTok uses a complex method of artificial intelligence which helps in recognizing facial features from the video of the users. TikTok analyzes the faces with the purpose of determining the age, race, gender and other data so that it can recommend content for the users to follow.

TikTok has therefore violated the act that prohibits companies from using facial recognition to identify users. The company has denied all the allegations made that it settled for the payout on the prevention of cases from going into trial. As per the settlement it has accepted to delete all the data already collected from the users and said that TikTok will not continue collecting the biometric information. It has accepted to follow the privacy policies of the app that reads it will not be tracing users' location, sharing data outside the country, or transmitting and storing data.

On using TikTok or Musical,ly before 1 October, users become eligible for the given compensation which is a part of a $92 million settlement against the TikTok app. The users can submit their claim by visiting the website of TikTok's data privacy settlement before 1 March 2022. The payments will be granted through PayPal and Venmo after the final approval by the court.
