Train Collusion Leaves More Than 30 Dead in Greece

ATHENS: More than thirty people have been killed and 85 more injured in a train collision that took place in central Greece on Tuesday night.

The Greek Fire Services mentioned that a passenger train with 350 people onboard collided with a freight train shortly before midnight, local time on Tuesday. The accident took place in the Temple area near the city of Larissa in Greece. The Governor of the Thessaly region of the country, Konstantinos Agorastos, also confirmed the deaths in this incident.

“The collusion was very strong” mentioned Konstantinos Agorastos. He mentioned that the first two carriages were completely destroyed in the incident while two more were detailed. The governor also mentioned that 194 passengers were safely evacuated to Thessaloniki using busses.

According to early morning reports, the fire and rescue workers arrived soon after the incident and their work continued till morning. It also mentioned that multiple cars got derailed and at least 3 of them burst into flames because of the accident which reportedly took place about 380 kilometres North of the capital city of Athens

According to the Rail operator Hellenic Train, the northbound passenger train was travelling from Athens to Thessaloniki and had about 350 passengers on board when the collision occurred. The passenger train had reportedly departed from Athens around 19:30 local time.

Survivors mentioned that multiple passengers were thrown out of the windows due to the force of the impact. The reaming people had to work hard to free themselves from the debris of the passenger train which slammed into a field near the track.

Videos that came from the location showed several derailed carriages. They were badly damaged with debris lying all around the place with thick plumes of smoke rising from the damaged trains.

The passenger train that was involved in the accident was operated by the Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane group which operates on 342 routes for both passenger and freight services.
