UK PM Boris Johnson inaugurates virtual Diwali fest

London: The Prime Minister of United Kingdom, Boris Johnson inaugurated the global Diwali fest – 'iGlobal Diwali Fest 2020.' During his inaugural address, Johnson drew parallels between the Indian festival Diwali and UK's fight against the global pandemic.

Johnson said, "Just as Lord Ram and Sita defeated Ravana, the UK too will defeat COVID-19." He further added that, "While undoubtedly there are huge challenges ahead, I have every confidence in the resilience and resolve and good sense of people across the country and that together we will overcome this virus, just as Diwali teaches us that light triumphs over darkness, good over evil, knowledge over ignorance."

The UK PM praised the Indian community in the UK for the sacrifices they may have to make to ensure a safe and secure Diwali amid the pandemic. He said that he knows that celebrating at a distance is not easy when you want to celebrate it with your family and friends. Praising the spirit of the Indian community, Johnson added, "So I want you to know that your sacrifices and your determination to do the right thing really are helping to save lives, and tough though I know many aspects of this year have been, I have been blown away by the inspirational way in which Hindus, Sikhs and Jains have responded to this crisis with compassion, community spirit and a can-do attitude."

'iGlobal Diwali Fest 2020' – a three-day virtual Diwali fest will see the participation of several top British politicians, including Priti Patel, UK Home Secretary, Opposition Labour Party Leader Keir Starmer and Liberal Democrat Ed Davey.

An award ceremony to honour the contribution of the British Indian community across various fields, along with music and dance performances will be a part of the fest.
