The United Kingdom (UK) is set to install the 9-foot tall bronze statue of
Havildar Ishar Singh as a mark of gratitude to the courageous hearts of 'Battle
of Saragarhi' who led 20 Sikh soldiers in the battle against more than 10,000
Afghan in September 1897.
The 9-ft bronze statue has become the UK's first-ever monument honouring the fallen heroes of 'Battle of Saragarhi', one of history's greatest battles ever fought.
The Battle of Saragarhi was fought between the Sikh Regiment of the British Indian armyand Afghan tribesmen on September 12, 1897, in Saragarhi in the then North-West Frontier Province (now Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan).
The 21 Jat Sikh soldiers of the 36th (Sikh) Regiment of Bengal Infantry was attacked by 10,000 to 12,000 Afghans and fight in the battle for more than six hours and left around 180 to 200 Pathan tribesman dead.
According to the media reports, the memorial will reportedly be unveiled near the Guru Nanak Gurdwara in Wednesfield, Wolverhampton in September 2021.
Councilors at the Wolverhampton City Council on Wednesday are expected to be approved the proposals to lease land to the gurdwara to install the statue.
A monument at Uppingham School in remembrance of Colonel John Haughton, the Commandant of the 36th Sikhs is the only other memorial to the battle in the UK.
Bollywood blockbuster "Kesari" was based on the Battle of Saragarhi which starred Akshay Kumar.
