U.S. Birthday Party Shooting Causes 7 Fatalities, Victim's Boyfriend Suspected

Washington - An armed man opened fire at a Colorado birthday party, 6 adults died on the spot, and one later passed away later due to his extensive wounds. 

According to detectives, families had gathered for a birthday party where the shooting occurred.

"The suspect, a boyfriend of one of the female victims, drove to the residence, walked inside, and began shooting people at the party before taking his own life," the police said in a statement.

"We are still investigating to determine a motive," they added. 

None of the children at the party have been harmed, and none of the deceased adults have been identified publicly yet. 

"From the officers who responded to the shooting to the investigators still on scene, we are all left incredibly shaken," said Colorado Springs police chief Vince Niski. "This is something you hope never happens in your own community."

John Suthers, Colorado Springs Mayor said the "senseless act of violence" has sent the whole neighborhood and community into mourning. 

A woman living nearby reported that she was woken up by the sound of many gunshots, so many, that she thought it was a thunderstorm. 

This was the third mass shooting in Colorado Springs since 2015.

In a similar incident, a girl from sixth grade about the age of 11-12, opened fire at her middle school in the northwestern US state of Idaho on Thursday, leaving three people injured. The place where this incident occurred is Rigby Middle School located near Idaho Falls. The student who initiated the shootings has not been named yet.

The United States, in the past few months, has suffered a steep spike in the frequencies of mass shootings, so much so, that President Joe Biden has named US gun violence an epidemic, and an international embarrassment.

More than 43,000 gun-related deaths were reported in the USA last year, making it the highest amongst all countries.
