New Delhi: A woman in the US city of Chicago was rescued after being kept hostage for hours after she failed to post her daily Wordle score which alerted her family that something was awry.

According to reports, on the night of February 5, Denyse Holt, 80-year-old was alone at home, when a guy broke into her house and pointed a pair of scissors at her after.

The man was identified as James H Davis III, 32 yr old, who broke the window and was naked and covered in cuts and blood. Davis is suspected of having a mental disorder.

Davis assured Holt that he would not harm her, but he did force her, fully clothed, to take a bath with him before locking her in the basement.

Meredith Holt-Caldwell, Holt's eldest daughter, who lives in Seattle, first noticed something was wrong when her mother failed to provide her daily Wordle score.

The game consists of guessing one five-letter word per day in just six tries. Its popularity has skyrocketed since the start of the year, with millions of people playing it daily.

Holt said her missing score was "disconcerting" to Holt-Caldwell, who knew her mother never missed this part of their daily routine.

Holt-Caldwell called the Chicago police to check on her mother's well-being, only to discover she was being held prisoner in her own house. A three-hour standoff ensued between police and Davis.

SWAT police eventually incapacitated him with a stun gun and rescued Denyse Holt.
