About College of Teacher Education Shillong: The College of Teacher Education (PGT), also known by its former nomenclature of PGT – Post Graduate Training (College) is located in the heart of Shillong.

The seed of this Teacher Training College at Shillong was sown during the Centenary year of Swami Vivekananda (1963), to commemorate the centenary of the great teacher in a befitting manner. The College is one of the first teacher education institutions in Shillong, the then capital of undivided Assam, catering specifically to teacher training in the State. It came into existence on 19th March, 1964.

The Institution owes much of its existence to the Jail Road Boys' High School, which generously offered the use of its premises and nurtured it for over a decade till it acquired its own premises. Shri S. C. Rajkhowa, the then DPI, Government of Assam, allowed the Post Graduate Training College special dispensation to commence functioning with part-time staff including the Principal as an interim arrangement.
