1. Amer Fort

Amer Fort, formerly known as Amber fort is a beautiful fortress in the city of Jaipur. Jaipur was formerly known as Amber and it is how the fort got its name.

This fort was built by a Mughal general during the construction of Jaipur and it is a great example of the Mughal era architecture.

The fort is quite big in size and inside the palace, you will see significant structures like the ‘Diwan-e-Aam’ or the public hall, the ‘Sheesh Mahal’ adorned in intricate mirror works, the ‘Sukh Mandir’ made of ivory and marbles, a resting place of the Royals and the Royal garden ‘Kesar Keyari’, although it is not maintained that well.

2. Chittorgarh Fort

Chittorgarh Fort was built in the 7th century when the Rajput started their rule in Rajasthan.

When you visit Chittorgarh fort, you cannot deny its glory. The fort is massive in its size and is definitely the grandest of the forts in Rajasthan. The kings of Mewar ruled from here. It was the seat of Mewar Kingdom.

Chittorgarh is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has a prominent place in the history of our country. It was here that Rani Padmini conducted the Jauhar ceremony along with other brave Rajput ladies.

3. Hawa Mahal

Hawa Mahal is the most important landmark in Jaipur. This huge edifice in the Pink City is made of red and pink sandstone.

Hawa Mahal is a prolific architectural specimen from the medieval ages and the fusion of Mughal and Rajput architecture is clearly evident in the structure.

The Hawa Mahal or Wind Palace was built by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh. This palace has a total of 953 ‘jharokas’ or windows, giving it a honeycomb like appearance.

The Hawa Mahal was built for a purpose. It was here where the royal ladies came during festivals to watch the festivities in the city streets.

4. Jaisalmer Fort

Did you know that one fourth of Jaisalmer still live inside a fort till date? Well yes, the Jaisalmer fort is one of the few existing living forts in the entire world and the only one in our country. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as well.

Built of yellow sandstone, the locals often call it as ‘Sonar Qila’, meaning golden fort.

Yellow sandstone is available in abundance in Jaisalmer, which is why it is known as the golden city.

The Jaisalmer fort looks especially beautiful during sunset, when the setting rays of the sun fall on the fort, giving the appearance as if it is truly made of gold.

5. Bhangarh Fort

Bhangarh Fort was built in the 17th century located in Alwar district of Rajasthan and is said to be inhabited by supernatural beings. The natives believed that the palace is cursed and haunted by ghosts and evil spirits.

Even there is a government notice board outside the front entrance that says the place should not be visited after sundown and entry after sunset is restricted.

6. Jantar Mantar Observatory

Raja Sawai Jai Singh II of Jaipur was an expert in Mathematics as well as the science of astronomy, which fueled him to make this observatory in Jaipur. This observatory was used to measure time and study eclipses.

There are four other Jantar Mantar observatories in India in Ujjain, Varanasi, Delhi and Mathura, making a total of five observatories in our country.

7. Kumbhalgarh Fort

This 15th century fort is another UNESCO World Heritage Site in Rajasthan. This fort along with the Chittorgarh fort formed the stronghold of the Mewar region.

The Kumbhalgarh fort is also where the Rajput warrior prince, Maharana Pratap was born.

The fortification wall of Kumbhalgarh fort is 36 kilometer long and is a prolific example of the medieval age architecture.

8. Mehrangarh Fort

Meherangarh fort is another 15th century fort and is located in the city of Jodhpur. The fort is immensely massive, making it one of the largest forts in the nation. The fort is architecturally quite beautiful as well.

Meherangarh fort sits atop a hill and is almost about 450 feet above Jodhpur, making it one of the highest points of the city.

From the fort you can get some of the most scenic and panoramic views of the entire Jodhpur city.

9. City palace

City Palace is another major point of interest in the Pink City. The Maharaja of Jaipur used to rule from this palace.

The city palace is another fine piece of architectural specimen with a nice fusion of Mughal and Rajput architecture.

Inside the palace there are many beautiful halls, temples and mahals. The ‘Mubarak Mahal’ and the ‘Chandra Mahal’ being the prominent ones.

There is also a small market section dedicated to the artisans of Rajasthan, who sell their craft. This is a great place to buy souvenirs.

10. Nahargarh

Nahargarh fort, formerly known as Sundargarh fort is another prominent fort in Rajasthan.

The fort architecture is an exquisite example of the Rajputana architecture, although the construction of the entire fort was never complete.

There is along wall that runs from the Nahargarh fort and connects it to the nearby Jaigarh fort. It is the most important architectural structure in the fort.

From inside the fort, you can get some of the most scenic views of the adjacent areas.
