About Lucky Flower Plants and the Month of Shravan

It is nice to have green plants at the office or home. They impart a sense of beauty and peace besides bringing freshness. Though most of the plants are kept for decorative purposes, there are some plants which can change the energy pattern of the place and bring prosperity and happiness. Vaastu shastra has advised certain flowering plants for this purpose. Flowers represent a new beginning; love and wisdom. They free you from stress and tension by bringing a fresh lease of energy. We shall discuss about some lucky flowers as per vaastu.

Champa (Plumeria)

The champa is regarded as a pure flower from the religious point of view. This flower is used widely in Puja. It is also liked by Lord Shiva as it is white. Champa has a nice fragrance which purifies the atmosphere.

Mogra (Jasmine)

No one really needs any introduction of this flower. It's aroma is truly very refreshing. Many perfumes, talcum powders etc are inspired from Jasmine. Mogra is a flower of the summer days and it blooms at night. It has a soothing effect on the mind and can reduce bad temper by removing negative energy.

Rose

It is widely planted by people in gardens and kept inside homes in vases. Incidentally, rose is the only thorny plant which is recommended by vaastu as otherwise thorny plants are banned inside the house. Rose has lot of medicinal properties also. Rose powder and Rose oil are specifically used for medicinal purposes. It can relive running noses and sore throat. Crushed rose petals are used as food and decoration in sweets. Eating dried rose petals helps in eliminating unwanted body fat and aids in weight loss. The rose is an astringent and can cure acne. The red rose is a symbol of love and is offered as a token of love. Its fragrance can bring peace and happiness. It should be kept at home as the rose can improve relationships.

Parijat (Raat Ki Rani)

The Parijat is also called Sewali in Assamese and Shefali in Bengali. It is called raat ki rani as it blooms at night. The parijat is regarded as a symbol of purity. Its leaves are used for treating chronic fever, rheumatism, arthritis, joint pain and obstinate sciatica. Dried parijat flowers are eaten as food although they taste bitter. The presence of this flower brings peace; prosperity and happiness in the house. Garlands made of parijat are used in weddings.

Datura Flower

The Datura Flower is used to please Lord Shiva as it is considered to be very dear to him. This flower is used for adorning his idol in various temples. Datura is meant to overcome fear of any kind and it also calms the troubled mind and emotions.

Vaastu tips for the month of Shravan

The month of Shravan is considered to be very sacred as per the Hindu calendar. One can be consecrated with the glorious energy of Lord Shiva for purifying their mind, body and soul.

As per the Shiv Purana 'The Story of Samudra Manthan' took place during the month of Shravan. The story is about Lord Shiva consuming the poison from the churning of the Ocean in order to save the people of the world. Likewise in today's era too, whenever one is seeking to get salvation and rescue himself/herself from the deadly curses and complexities of life he/she worships Lord Shiva. It is believed that Lord Shiva not only gives them rock like inner strength to fight their battles but also helps to liberate them from the endless miseries of life.

I got in touch with Vaastu expert Ashna Ddhannak who shared some guidelines on how one can benefit by applying the age old science of vaastu and its principles during the month of Shravan. This benefit is all about reaping spiritual rewards and opening a positive karmic account in life.

One can activate the East corner of the house by placing small water symbols like a mini water fountain for good luck. One must ensure that the flow of water from the fountain is from North to East and that the water is cleaned at least a few times in a week. Stagnancy has to be avoided as it will create wrong energy. Fresh water with momentum in the East can positively impact a person's thought process enabling him/her to become proactive in terms of taking the right decisions in life. This in turn will help to attain his / her goals with speed.

In the month of Shravan the east section of the house must be paid special attention to as this direction is ruled by none other than Lord Shiva. It is highly recommended to place a statue of Ardhnareshwar (half male and half female form of Lord Shiva along with Goddess Parvati) made out of a single piece of white marble in the East direction of the home during the month of Shravan. Worshipping this statue will bring colossal blessings in one's relationships.

Another very important element of Shiva is the Rudraksha which is a bead made out of the tears of Lord Shiva. Wearing a Rudraksha during the month of Shravan is considered to be highly auspicious as it not only acts as a protecting shield against the planetary maleffects in one's birth chart but also helps to attain immense peace and harmony from within.

One can wear a 'Do Mukhi' Rudraksh for balancing the family and work relationships and a Gauri Shankar Rudraksh for enhancing marriage opportunities.

On the other hand, Panch Mukhi Rudraksh is widely available and mostly used for rosary beads for prayers and they are considered excellent for overall good luck and health.

Saat Mukhi Rudraksh is considered to be a form of Maa Lakshmi and is an excellent accessory to enhance one's financial freedom. It is best recommended for businessmen and people in the field of art and creativity as well.

One can also fast and do puja rituals during the Shravan month for releasing all bad karmic debts and moving towards the path of spirituality. Simple ceremonies like offering cold milk, water and bilva patra leaves (the 3 leaves that signify the Trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh) along with curd and honey on the Shiv Linga every Monday is very recommended.

Reader Queries

Q. I have a house on rent which is a source of our income. But after our last tenants vacated it, we have not got new tenants. People come and see the apartment but go away. It is in the heart of the city next to a main road. There is another apartment on the East. The entrance is from Northeast. Is there any vaastu defect?

Nandan Sharma, Guwahati

The present scenario for rented houses in Guwahati is not good. Due to sporadic construction of apartments, there are many flats ready for occupation at present but no takers. You will have to wait and maybe lower the rent a bit. I see only one vaastu defect which is the apartment blocking your East. Install a Surya Yantra at the East on a Sunday. A copper sun at the East will also help.
