Guests On Google Meet, Food Via Zomato: Bengal Couple's Pandemic Wedding

Kolkata: A couple hailing from West Bengal has come up with a creative idea of conducting their wedding ceremony online on Google Meet. It sounds bizzare and one might probably have never heard of a concept like this.

Sandipan Sarkar and Aditi Das will tie the knot on 24 January and the Bengali couple is all set to host 450 guests at their wedding, that too without flouting Covid guidelines.

In a one of its kind wedding, the guests will use Google Meet to "attend" the ceremony and the food will be delivered to all the guests via Zomato.

The couple hailing from Burdwan decided to host their wedding on Google Meet so as to ensure safety of their guests and to adhere to the 200-people capacity for weddings set by the state government.

Their guests will be able to watch a live telecast of the wedding by using the video conferencing platform. The dinner will be served to the guests by Zomato at the comfort of their homes.

"We had been planning to get married for the past year, but the pandemic became a problem," Mr Sarkar said.

The idea of hosting a digital wedding struck Sandipan after he was hospitalized for four days following Covid-19 complications.

Mr. Sarkar told the media that he was worried about the safety of his family and the safety of his guests.

It is to be noted that about 100 to 120 guests will attend the wedding physically while more than 300 people will watch the live telecast. All invitees will receive a link to watch the wedding along with passwords one day before the ceremony.

A Zomato official, while speaking to Telegraph, said that the company lauded the move.

"It was a very new idea for us. I talked to seniors in the company, who welcomed it. We have already prepared a team to monitor this wedding's deliveries. We laud such a move in the pandemic. We are planning to promote this event officially," the Zomato official said.
