There are currently 7 National Parks and 18 Wildlife Sanctuaries in Assam.

18 Wildlife Sanctuaries in Assam:

1. Panidihing Wildlife Sanctuary (Sivasagar, Assam): Panidihing Wildlife Sanctuary is famous for migratory birds, it was established in the year 1995 with an area of 33.93 kilometres square.

2. Amchang Wildlife Sanctuary (Guwahati, Assam): It was established in 2004 covering the area of 78.64-kilometer square, famous for rare, endangered animals and birds.

3. Dihing Patkai Wildlife Sanctuary (Tinsukia, Assam): It was established in 2004 and covers an area of 111.19 km square. It was later announced as the Dehing Patkai Elephant Reserve under Project Elephant.

4. Barali Wildlife Sanctuary (Cachar, Assam): Barali Wildlife Sanctuary was founded in the year 2004 with an area of 326.25 kilometers square. It is famous for Tropical Moist Evergreen and Semi-Evergreen Forests.

5. Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary (Marigaon, Assam): The Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is famous for the great Indian One-horned rhinoceros found in its area. It was formed in 1987 and covers an area of 38.81 km square.

6. Sonai Rupai Wildlife Sanctuary (Sonitpur, Assam): It was established in 1998 and is known for its availability of the Indian Bison and Elephant. Its land area spreads over 220 km sq.

7. Deepor Beel Wildlife Sanctuary (Kamrup, Assam): It is recognized for being the staging site for migratory birds in the country.

8. Barnadi Wildlife Sanctuary (Udalguri, Assam): This wildlife sanctuary in Assam is special for the presence of rare species of Hispid Hare and Pygmy Hog in its region. It was formed in the year 1980 and covers a land area of 26.22 km sq.

9. Lawkhowa Wildlife Sanctuary (Nagaon, Assam): This wildlife sanctuary is well known for being the dwelling of more than 225 species of birds along with Asiatic water buffaloes, the great Indian-one horned rhinoceros, royal Bengal tigers and elephants. It was formed in 1972 covering a land area of 70.14 km sq.

10. East Karbi Anglong Wildlife Sanctuary (Karbi Anglong, Assam): It is well known mainly for the majestic Royal Bengal Tiger and also for other animals like the strapping Indian bison, Himalayan bear and imperial wild elephant. The wildlife sanctuary was established in the year 2000 and spread over an area of 221.81 km sq.

11. Bherjan- Borajan Padumoni Wildlife Sanctuary (Tinsukia, Assam): The area is the home of leopard, slow loris, hoolock gibbon, rhesus macaque, capped langur and pig-tailed macaque. It was established in 1999 and consists of 7.22 land areas.

12. Chakrashila Wildlife Sanctuary (Kokrajhar, Assam): The place is known across the country for being the habitat of golden langur. It was formed in the year 1994 with an area of 45.56 km sq.

13. Burachapori Wildlife Sanctuary (Sonitpur, Assam): Burachapori WS is famous for different types of reptiles, birds and mammals. It was established in 1995 and covers an area of 44.06-kilometer sq.

14. Garampani Wildlife Sanctuary ( Karbi Anglong, Assam): Garampani Wildlife Sanctuary is a popular sanctuary for its beautiful waterfalls and hot springs. It was established in 1952 with a small area of 6.05 km sq.

15. Nambor Doigrung Wildlife Sanctuary (Golaghat Assam): The Nambor Doigrung Wildlife Sanctuary spreads over an area of 97.15 km sq. It was established in 2003 and is known widely for its hot water springs.

16. Marat Longri Wildlife Sanctuary (Karbi Anglong, Assam): The place is famous for its fauna such as Asiatic Elephant, Hoolock Gibbon, the Royal Bengal Tiger and Himalayan Black Bear. It was formed in 2003 spreading an area of 451 km sq.

17. Hollangapar Wildlife Sanctuary (Jorhat, Assam): Known formerly as Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary is known for being the dwelling of ape species and the only nocturnal primate of Northeastern India called the Bengal slow loris. It was established in 1997 spreading its area to 20.98 km sq.

18. Nambor Wildlife Sanctuary (Karbi Anglong, Assam): It is famous for rare orchids, wild elephants, and different species of monkeys. The wildlife sanctuary was established in the year 2000 and covers a land area of 37km square.

7 National Parks in Assam:

1. Kaziranga National Park: Known for Great One-horned Rhino is a UNESCO world heritage site.

2. Dibru-Saikhowa National Park: Biosphere Reserve is famous as a National Park for rare white-winged wood ducks and feral horses.

3. Manas National Park: A UNESCO world heritage site in 1985, Tiger Reserve is known mainly for the availability of wild water buffalo in its area.

4. Raimona National Park: Spreading over the Kokrajhar subdivision is famous for being the home of rare butterflies and elephant herds.

5. Nameri National Park: Famous for wild pigs, gaurs, leopards, sambars, tigers and elephants on the foothills of Eastern Himalayas.

6. Dihing Patkai National Park: Known for the presence of varieties of mammals, reptiles and birds located in the rainforest area of 231.65-kilometer square.

7. Rajiv Gandhi- Orang National Park: Located on the banks of mighty River the Brahmaputra is famous for rich flora and fauna, it was announced as a National Park in the year 1999.
