World Heritage Day 2022: Must Visit Heritage Sites Of Northeast

World Heritage Day is observed every year on 18 April to spread awareness regarding the preservation of ancient culture and natural heritage.

World Heritage Day is observed across the globe every year on Monday 18 April to bring awareness about natural heritage and preserve the ancient culture.

The day has been announced as World Heritage Day by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) for the awareness of dying cultures of different countries and also for the sites, sculptures and monuments.

Theme:

The theme for this year's World Heritage Day is 'Heritage and Climate' which indicates the connection between climate change and natural heritages worldwide.

History:

In the year 1982, the ICOMOS (International Council of Monuments and Sites) came up with a suggestion that people across the world need to be aware of preserving the historic sites as well as the ancient culture.

After one year during the 22nd General Conference of UNESCO i.e. in 1983, the organization adopted the idea regarding the conservation of ancient tribes, cultures and historical sites.

Significance:

The day holds great historical significance as it is mainly celebrated by focusing on the historic culture and sites that depict the ancient past.

The natural heritage and ancient culture have remarkable universal importance as it not only symbolizes the ancient human lifestyle but also give the idea of ancient architecture that needs to be preserved.

Here are some of the must-visit heritage sites for travel enthusiasts in Assam and the northeast:

1. Kaziranga National Park (Assam): 

Kaziranga National Park in Assam is a UNESCO world heritage site of India recognized across the globe for the presence of Great Indian one-horned Rhinoceros.

2. Khangchendzonga National Park (Sikkim): 

Khangchendzonga National Park is a national park and a biosphere reserve located in the northeastern state of Sikkim. Inscribed to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list in July 2016, the site has become the first "Mixed Heritage" site in India.

3. Manas Wildlife Sanctuary (Assam): 

The UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site Manas National Park in Assam  located in the foothills of the Himalayas is a project tiger reserve and national park.

4. Apatani Cultural Landscape (Arunachal Pradesh): 

Located in the Lower Subansiri district, the Apatani Cultural Landscape site give a panoramic view of dense forest, lofty mountains and pristine landscapes.

5. Keibul Lamjao National Park (Manipur): 

It is the only floating wildlife sanctuary in the world located in the Loktake Lake in Manipur's Bishnupur district.
