GUWAHATI: Insurance Ombudsman Office Guwahati observed Bimalokpal Day on Wednesday at its office at Guwahati with a day long programme. The observation started with a press meet addressed by Ombudsman KB Saha. He informed the house that the Guwahati office of the Insurance Ombudsman is having the largest jurisdiction of geographical area covering the seven states of NE region viz Assam, Arunachal, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland and Tripura. Ombudsman explained the history of development of ombudsman in India and its functions.

Insurance Ombudsman system was established in the year 1998 by Ministry of Finance, Government of India through a notification in the matter on 11.11.1998. Chairman, LIC of India, was made the first Chairman of Governing Body of Insurance Council (GBIC) created to establish the Insurance Ombudsman system. The purpose of the Insurance Ombudsman system was to resolve all complaints relating to settlement of claims against the Insurance Companies in a cost effective, efficient and impartial manner.

Bimalokpal Day is being celebrated on November' 11 by Offices of Insurance Ombudsman across the country and office of the Executive Council of Insurers, Mumbai, to create awareness about speedy mechanism for redressal of insurance related grievances free of cost, stated a press release.
