Several Public Sector Banks to Remain Shut This Saturday

CHENNAI: An all-India strike has been called by the All India Bank Employees Association on the upcoming Saturday, ie. November 19. Banking services are expected to remain disrupted throughout the day across the country because of this strike.

A message from one of the public sector banks of the country notified its employees regarding this strike. It also informed its customers that necessary steps have been taken to ensure the smooth conduct of the online functions, but those services which need the working of branches and offices, might be affected by this strike. Meaning that cash transactions and clearing of cheques and drafts will not be possible on the day.

It is important to note that this is going to be the third Saturday of the month, and the banks would have remained open otherwise. Apart from the second and fourth Saturdays and Sundays, this month also had four banking holidays as notified by the Reserve Bank of India.

C H Venkatachalam mentioned that outsourcing certain jobs to private parties will impact the privacy of the customers of the banks and will pose a risk to their assets. He is the General Secretary of the All India Bank Employees Association. He also mentioned the reduction of recruitment of banks at the lower level. He went on to add that violations of the Industrial Disputes (Amendment) Act were also conducted by several banks. Saying that bank management ignored the advice of the labour authorities and went forward with forcibly transferring employees.

"From AIBEA, we reiterated our issues and demands arising out of the various unilateral decisions in violation of the existing provisions of Bipartite Settlement in some of the banks and the attacks on jobs and job security and vindictive actions in some other banks. AIBEA has no alternative than to express its protest through our agitational programme and strike action," said C H Venkatachalam.

Private sector banks will however continue to work as per the schedule and remain unaffected by the strike.
