The Assam-Meghalaya impasse does not seem to have an end, following a violent attack on Assam vehicles in Shillong during a motorbike rally of the Khasi Students' Union (KSU) on August 19. While the Meghalaya Police have arrested a few KSU leaders for their alleged involvement in the violence, the unrest has triggered a blockade of Meghalaya-bound vehicles by Assam taxi drivers after more than 30 tourist vehicles were vandalised. A counter-blockade initiated by the Meghalaya side has further strained relations between the two neighbouring states. The situation has further worsened, with the Northeast Petroleum Mazdoor Union (NEPMZ) on Friday issuing a threat to suspend transportation of petroleum products, including LPG, from Assam to Meghalaya by citing safety concerns for Assam-registered vehicles operating in the state. The Khasi Students' Union (KSU) bike rally was organized to press the state government on a five-point charter of demands after a 15-day ultimatum had expired. The KSU's demands included cancelling the Rs 1,800-crore Shree Cement and limestone project and its public hearing in East Jaintia Hills, fully implementing the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA), enforcing stricter rules for migrant workers, changing job recruitment processes at NEIGRIHMS and the Meghalaya Public Service Commission to include local job reservations, and holding officials accountable for the public hearing of the cement project. While none of these demands had anything to do with vehicles with Assam registration numbers plying in Shillong, why the KSU chose to attack so many Assam vehicles remains a mystery. However, the KSU's acts of vandalism have effectively halted the thriving tourism and hospitality industry in the state. As the news of the vandalism and the blockade which followed spread through various media platforms, hotels and homestays in Shillong, Sohra (Cherrapunjee) and adjoining areas reported 80 to 90 per cent cancellations. Mention must be made that these are not merely current bookings but also cover advance booking for the forthcoming Durga Puja, Diwali and Christmas seasons.  Meghalaya, where the summer season sees a special surge in tourist arrivals, had received a record 1.6 million tourists in 2024.  The Tour Operators Association of Meghalaya, Meghalaya Rural Tourism Forum, Tour Guides Association of Meghalaya, Federation of Shillong Hotels, Meghalaya Tourism Development Forum and Meghalaya Rural Tourism Cooperative Federation jointly condemned the attacks and vandalism involving vehicles from outside the state, including tourist taxis and buses, as well as pedestrians and bystanders. Unfortunately, some individuals have begun to make allegedly irresponsible comments about the situation, exacerbating the issue. The Tour Operators' Association of Meghalaya, Meghalaya Rural Tourism Forum, Tour Guides Association of Meghalaya, Federation of Shillong Hotels, Meghalaya Tourism Development Forum and Meghalaya Rural Tourism Cooperative Federation have jointly condemned the attacks and vandalism involving vehicles from outside the state, including tourist taxis and buses, as well as pedestrians and bystanders. But the KSU has apparently failed to, or refused to accept, the reality. Appeals made by the chief ministers of the two states for restraint and withdrawal of the blockade and counter-blockade have failed to elicit a positive response till late Saturday evening.
